Is Your Vehicle Due for a Summer Check-Up to Handle the Heat?

Michael Lazo

As the summer heat intensifies, it’s crucial to ensure your vehicle is in top shape.  That means that you may want to have a summer check-up to prepare for warmer temperatures.  In this month’s blog, we review tips and signs that your vehicle may need a summer check-up.

Cooling System

The cooling system is vital in preventing your vehicle from overheating. Signs of a problem include:

  • Temperature gauge reading high : If your vehicle’s temperature gauge consistently shows a high reading, this is a clear sign your cooling system needs attention.
  • Coolant leaks : Puddles of bright green, sweet-smelling liquid under your vehicle indicate a coolant leak, which can lead to overheating.

Tires

Tires affect your vehicle’s performance, safety, and fuel efficiency. Watch out for these symptoms:

  • Uneven wear : This could indicate alignment issues or that you may need a tire rotation.
  • Low tire pressure : If your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light comes on or the tires look deflated, they need to be inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.  Remember, tires expand under heat so be careful about overinflation.

Brakes

Effective brakes are essential for safe driving. Signs of brake problems include:

  • Squeaking or grinding noises : These sounds often indicate worn brake pads.
  • Vehicle pulling to one side when braking : This could suggest a brake fluid leak or worn brake linings.

Batteries

A reliable battery is crucial, especially in hot weather which can accelerate battery corrosion. Symptoms of a dying battery include:

  • Difficulty starting the vehicle : This often means the battery is weak and may need replacement.
  • Corrosion on the battery terminals : White, powdery substances around the terminals can interfere with the battery’s performance.

Air Filters

Your vehicle’s air filter is like its lungs, and it needs to be clean to ensure optimal performance. Here are some signs that your air filter may need to be replaced:

  • Decreased fuel efficiency : A dirty air filter can cause your engine to work harder, resulting in lower miles per gallon.
  • Misfiring or missing engine : An excessively dirty air filter can starve the engine of oxygen, causing a misfire.
  • Unusual engine sounds : When the vehicle is in idle, you should only hear a smooth humming from the engine. If there are sputtering sounds, it could be due to a dirty air filter.

Other Important Maintenance Items

  • Air Conditioning : If your vehicle is not cooling as well as it used to, the A/C system might need a check-up.
  • Belts and Hoses : Cracks or wear on the belts and hoses can lead to serious issues, such as a broken timing belt or a coolant leak.
  • Fluid Levels : Regularly check and replenish essential fluids, including engine oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid.

Remember, regular maintenance is key to keeping your vehicle running smoothly and safely this summer. If you notice any of these signs, schedule a check-up with the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage.
