Do Your Tires Need Special Care After Winter Driving?
Michael Lazo
Winter is tough on tires. Cold temperatures, icy roads, and salt can cause damage, making spring the perfect time for tire care. Proper post-winter maintenance improves safety and extends tire life. In this month’s blog, we share tips to keep your tires in top condition.
- Inspect for Cracks and Damage: The harsh winter elements can cause rubber to degrade. Carefully examine your tires for visible cracks or cuts along the sidewalls and tread. Cracks are often a sign of dry rot, which compromises the tire’s integrity and poses a safety risk. If you find significant damage, it’s best to replace the affected tires immediately.
- Check for Uneven Wear:
Uneven wear patterns on your tires can indicate underlying issues with alignment, balance, or suspension. Take a close look at the tread wear. For instance:
- Excessive wear on the inner or outer edges suggests misalignment.
- A “cupping” or scalloped pattern might indicate suspension problems.
- Bulges or bubbles on the tire surface could signal internal damage. Address these issues promptly by visiting a trusted repair shop.
- Monitor Tread Depth: Adequate tread depth ensures good traction. Use the penny test: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing downward. If you can see all of his head, it’s time to replace your tires.
- Rotate Your Tires: Regular tire rotations help distribute wear evenly, promoting a longer lifespan. After winter, it’s an excellent time to schedule a rotation. Most manufacturers recommend doing this every 5,000-7,000 miles.
- Maintain Proper Inflation: Cold weather often causes tire pressure to drop. Check and adjust tire pressure according to your vehicle’s specifications, usually found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker inside the driver’s door. Proper inflation improves fuel efficiency and prevents uneven wear.
- Clean and Protect: Road salt and grime can accelerate tire wear and corrode rims. Wash your tires thoroughly to remove any buildup and consider applying a tire protectant to shield against UV rays and cracking.
By dedicating some time to post-winter tire care, you will improve vehicle safety and maximize tire longevity. If you would like your tires to be inspected or any necessary repairs performed, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.
