Is Your Vehicle Ready to Pass Its Emissions Test?

Michael Lazo

As a New Jersey vehicle owner, staying current with emissions testing is required to help protect air quality. Failing a test can be frustrating, but understanding the causes helps you pass with confidence. This month’s blog explains the process and how Shade Tree Garage can help if your vehicle fails inspection.

NJ Emissions Testing is Performed only on vehicles made after 1995.

NJ Emissions Testing includes the following:

  1. Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) Check  – A computer scans for emissions-related trouble codes current or pending.
  2. Visual Inspection  – Ensures proper functionality of the emissions control system also looking for signs of tampering to defeat the system.

What Causes a Vehicle to Fail NJ Emissions Testing?

  • Malfunction Indicator Light On, aka; Check Engine Light On  – Automatic inspection failure if the light is illuminated.
  • Transmission problems – Anything that effects emissions will put the MIL on, including an improperly shifting transmission.
  • Defective Thermostat – if the engine doesn’t warm up quick enough the MIL will illuminate.
  • Faulty Catalytic Converter  – This monitored component reduces harmful emissions; a failure leads to increased pollutants.
  • Leaking or Damaged Exhaust System  – Leaks affect emission readings and must be repaired.
  • Malfunctioning Oxygen Sensors  – These sensors regulate fuel mixture; if faulty, emissions increase.

Diagnosing & Repairing Common Emission Issues

If your vehicle fails, a  certified emission technician  will:

  • Scan for error codes using an OBD reader.
  • Test to determine the reason for the codes occur.
  • Inspect the catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, and exhaust system for malfunctions.
  • Test the fuel and air mixture to ensure proper combustion efficiency.
  • Repair leaks, replace faulty components, and ensure compliance.
