Brakes wear out over time and the life of your car’s brake pads is dependent upon many factors such as driving conditions and how you apply your brakes. In addition, brake fluid is one of the most important components in your car’s braking system, yet it is often one of the most overlooked. When your car is maintained regularly at Shade Tree Garage, brakes are one of the points we check with each service. Preventative maintenance and brake repair are critical to keeping you and your family safe when driving; especially with the amount of traffic we have here in New Jersey.

If you notice any of the following, you should call to have your brakes inspected:

• Brake Light is On: Either the emergency brake is on or you have a serious drop in hydraulic pressure. Your brakes may be near total failure and you need to have them checked immediately.
• Drag: This is caused by “sticking” brakes, hot wheels or an engine that has lost power. The brakes may be failing to release. The condition can reverse itself, leaving you with no brakes at all.
• Grabs: “Touchy” brakes that grab with the least amount of pressure. This symptom may indicate a problem as simple as a grease or oil-contaminated lining. It may also be an indication of a more serious problem such as loose or broken components that can fail in an emergency.
• Hard Pedal: Requires extreme pressure to make the brakes function and can mean trouble with your power brakes, restricted hydraulic lines, frozen calipers or wheel cylinders, or damaged brake linings.
